SUNDAY BIKES EX 2018 – REVIEW

Sunday Bikes do things differently. Their flagship ‘Soundwave’ frame features many unique kinds of technology that Sunday have developed and patented – things like the wave tubing that resists dents and enhances stiffness. They look different, have different handling and are often chosen by those riders who like to be a little different. Sunday have been treading their own path since the beginning and we respect them for it. Let’s check out the Sunday EX 2018 bike.

The EX is a solid bike. With a host of Odyssey and Sunday parts built around a frame that shares many key features with the super high tech Sunday Soundwave, this bike is, as they say, difficult to match.

The EX comes in two flavours – there’s an all black model with just a splash of colour on the saddle, attributed to Erik Elstran, or the raw version we have here that the wildman Chris Childs has proudly put his name on. We’ve always had a soft spot for a raw and black bike (it’s a classic combo) and we make no exception here. We love the looks. Weld the frame nicely, give it a coat of lacquer and then finish it off with black parts. It definitely looks the ticket.

It’s a 20.75” frame, with some nicely balanced numbers elsewhere: 75º headtube angle, 13.25-13.5” chainstays, 11.5” bottom bracket. In practice, this combo makes it quick and responsive but nicely predictable. It’s a good balance.

Parts wise, the EX is well-equipped. Sunday have hooked it up with two extremely popular Odyssey products, the Broc Raiford grips and the Twisted Pro pedals. Oh, and the Odyssey Path Pro tyre. All three of these are featured elsewhere in the Ride UK BMX 100 – they’re damn good products. To get them on a complete bike straight out of the box is an absolute touch.

“With Odyssey parts and a frame that shares many features with the super high tech Soundwave, the Sunday EX bike is difficult to match.”

In addition, there are Sunday branded sealed hubs on Sunday Lightning rims, a nice tripod seat and the celebrated Odyssey Springfield brake setup.

It’s a bike ready for anything, to be honest. As Sunday say themselves, “The EX feels right at home whether you’re riding street, park or trails – just like Chris Childs.”
