GSPORT RIBCAGE RIM – REVIEW

The GSPORT Ribcage is a strong rim. It’s a very, very strong rim.

Why is it called the Ribcage? That’s because the spoke holes are reinforced with patented ribs that support the sides of each spoke nipple. This eliminates the possibility of a nipple pulling through even when under the highest stresses.

GSPORT is arguably one of the most widely respected brands in BMX. They make relatively few parts, but each one is meticulously engineered by bike genius George French. That means GSPORT products are trusted and respected the world over, end of story.

The GSPORT Ribcage features crossover spoke lacing, where each spoke goes from one side of the hub to the opposite side of the rim. This greater angle increases lateral strength, which is crucial – it means the Ribcage is more resistant to buckling.

There are some clever bits of design to maximise strength and save weight. The outer walls are extra thick to protect against dents, while the other walls have been made extra thin to help keep the weight down. The 36mm width and 18mm height are also important design factors, spreading out the impacts and maximizing resistance to pinch puncturing.

Clearly then, the Ribcage is strong, we’ve covered that. But at 500 grams, it’s also very light. GSPORT claim that the strength to weight ratio of the Ribcage cannot be matched.

The entire design of the GSPORT Ribcage rim centres around the use of a proprietary high strength aluminum alloy. That means GSPORT have their own material made specially for them in an on-site foundry. All bases covered – this is an extremely advanced BMX rim.
