PREMIUM SLIM PLASTIC PEDALS – REVIEW

Premium make some really slick parts. From Chad Kerley’s signature CK forks to smaller bits like these Premium Slim Plastic Pedals, they’re reliably built and nicely designed products. You’ve probably seen the CK tyres on many bikes over the couple of years and the giant Refuse Resist tyre / balloon before that, but people often forget about how good the Premium pedals are.

The Premium Slim Plastic Pedals have been popular for a few years. Why? Because of that second word – SLIM. They have a very low height, meaning your feet are much closer to the axle so you feel more balanced. The spec on that is 20mm at their thickest point and 15mm at their thinnest. Like a crisp. Also, many people love the look and weight of slim pedals, as they make your bike that tiniest bit lighter.

It’s a polycarbonate body, which – crucially – is replaceable. That’s right, if you grind the bodies down, you can pick up spare ones and keep the same axle. Genius! That’s another reason why there are so many of these pedals out there. The bodies come in various colours, obvious things like black and some translucent colours, plus chrome! Yep, chrome plastic. Proper snazzy.

The axle is full 4130 chromoly, which runs on two sealed outer bearings and one inner bushing. Sealed bearings, plastic body. These are different! The bearings and axle are built to last, that’s for sure.

Grip-wise, these Premiums are great. There are eight moulded pins on each side of the pedal body, plus you’ll notice that the whole body is knurled for extra grip. It’s not ‘micro-knurling’ either, it’s actually much rougher (aka grippier) than you might expect.

All in all, an interesting pedal. Sealed bearings, replaceable plastic body, good colours, loads of grip.
