Friday Randoms: Five Things We Don’t Miss About BMX


Fat Chains

At the time these were actually awesome. Snapped chains were common place during mid school street sessions. Sprocket attacks, crooked attempts, and failed sub box blunts left chains about as useful as an internal gyro. However, they weighed a ton and chewed through sprockets in no time at all.

The introduction of smaller sprockets made these puppies an endangered species, which was a relief. Once again, BMXers in the know coming to our rescue. Imagine for a moment though, if they hadn’t, we’d all be riding around on bikes as low as a scooter, with a bean can head tube, a rickety freewheel, motorcycle chain and a seat clamp which looks like a piece of space junk. Scary…
