Freewheel
Not quite as harsh as the internal gyro, the freewheel was hardly self inflicted. At the time this was a fantastic feet of engineering, it was only when it fell into our hands did it turn into a real problem. Freewheels could not take a beating, and that was their only flaw, well that and trying to remove them!
During the 1990’s sessions turned sour on a regular basis as someones freewheel blew up, often leading to a nasty slam, a mini ramp full of tiny bearings and the realisation that you’ve got one hell of a job on to get this thing working again.
These days we have the cassette hub, initially it had it’s problems, but on the whole it’s been a life saver. If you started riding post 2004 ish.. you seriously don’t know you’re born!
