BSD SAFARI PEDALS – REVIEW

Apparently, Reed Stark waltzed onto the BSD team with some clear ideas about pedal design. He had noticed how the corner pins on plastic pedals were vulnerable to grinding and breaking off when your bike hits the ground. With that in mind, the BSD Safari Pedals were born…

BSD is a Scottish BMX brand with one hell of a team. Their momentum can be traced along with the success of the riders who they sponsor – just look at Kriss Kyle, Alex D, Reed Stark, David Grant and Dan Paley. Some of these guys are almost brands in their own right. BSD has kept the fire lit with great products and arguably some of the best video content of any brand, thanks to the efforts of Dave Sowerby. Transmission, BSD’s feature length team video, is the perfect example of the kind of polished, highly considered video work Sowerby produces. Pair that strong brand image with a reputation for high quality parts, and you have a genuinely strong BMX company.

The Safari pedal has no less than twenty pins on each side – that’s a lot! Many pedals have less than half that number of pins. Crucially, the extra pins on the Safari pedal are located in those high impact areas mentioned above – this means the pedal should last longer as it maintains enough grip even after taking some savage abuse.

“The BSD Safari pedal is clearly one of the best plastic pedals out there at the moment, proven by how many people choose to run them.”

Another note about the pins is that they’re hexagonal, rather than round. A minor detail… But perhaps with the shape of certain shoe soles, such as the Vans Waffle, you might get just the tiniest bit of extra grip. Besides the pins, the pedal body itself is knurled to provide extra purchase and is made from a tough Nylon Fibreglass compound.

The BSD Safari pedal is clearly one of the best plastic pedals out there at the moment, proven by how many people choose to run them.
