CULT CONTROL 2018 – REVIEW

One step up from the Cult Gateway comes the Control. Finished in bold red with all black parts (shown) or black and purple, it definitely has good looks from afar, but come closer and you’ll see what matters.

There are several things we really like about this bike. Up front, it’s dialled – 4-piece bars, Cult Salvation V3 top load stem, Cult-branded toptube gusset and the Sean Ricany signature grips. With all parts in black, it seems like a sleek machine.

Getting into the deeper qualities, while this frame isn’t full chromoly construction, it does feature heat treated 3-piece cranks and sealed bearings all round. That should be more than enough spec for the riders this bike is aimed for.

Looking at the wheels, the Control features a single walled rim up front and a double walled rim at the back, both set on sealed hubs. What that means is that the front wheel is a bit lighter, with less rotational weight to keep the front end feeling nice and light. The rear wheel has a bit more reinforcement, giving you strength where it’s most needed. Being able to trust the back end – both in regards to the bearings and the rim strength – when learning tricks like spins and tailwhips, is a welcome feeling.

From a rider’s perspective, seeing a brand name on numerous parts on a complete bike gives you a little extra peace of mind that if they’ve put their name to it, you can trust it. On the Control there are plenty of Cult branded parts. There’s enough to give you confidence in the parts themselves, but not too much branding to seem over the top.

As a first bike, the Cult Control has a hell of a lot to offer, and will (quite literally) keep you rolling for a long time.
