In 1988, Vans released the Caballero. It was Steve Caballero’s signature skateboarding shoe and was fundamentally his version of a Vans Sk8-Hi, with the padded high profile collar for ankle support. This was on sale for a few years before Cabellero and the skating community started messing with the design… It seemed that the development of street skating demanded a different range of movement, so people started cutting that high collar down and taping it up. After Caballero did this a few times, he had a conversation with Vans about changing the shape of the shoe, and the rest is history… The Vans Half Cab was born.
“We see the Vans Half Cab Pro on pedals everywhere…”
This shoe has been on sale for 25 years now (you may have seen some anniversary press earlier in 2017) and continues to sell like there’s no tomorrow. It’s obviously been trusted by the skate world for many years – and it’s popular with BMX riders too. The mid top design, the strong cup sole, the newer ‘Pro’ version with more durable materials and better insole… It all makes for a seriously decent BMX shoe.
