MERRITT GFE PEGS – REVIEW

Merritt is an East Coast USA brand that makes BMX parts. Their team is a diverse mix of styles – they’ve got trails legend Brian Foster aka the Blue Falcon on the squad, then they’ve also got guys like Brandon Begin and Billy Perry… There’s a whole world of BMX between those two groups! For the purposes of this Merritt GFE peg review, we’ll be focusing more on the latter.

Brandon Begin might look like a confused homeless man, but he’s clearly got some skills on a BMX bike. Apart from famously eating a whole load of shit while trying to half-cab ‘El Toro’, his approach to street riding sees him do some pretty unlikely moves on whatever setup he finds. Totally new-school, progressive street style. You know the drill. A lot of Brandon Begin’s freshest moves are accomplished using the Merritt GFE pegs, so we’ve got some here to check out.

“Merritt GFE Pegs… GFE = Grind Forever?”

You can get these pegs in a length of 4.75”. That is LONG. Expect crooked grinds and spins out of grinds to be just a touch easier with that extra length. They also come in a 4.25” size.

Build wise, the GFE peg has a special PA blend plastic sleeve that Merritt say will slide further and last longer than other plastic pegs on the market. GFE = Grind Forever? Every brand has claims about the quality of their plastic peg sleeves, but in this case we can see the proof in the pudding (assuming Brandon Begin’s videos are, in fact, the pudding.)

The major design difference, however, is the construction of these things. Merritt have managed to mould a steel washer into the plastic sleeve – this should help keep the peg in place, as the steel contact with your frame stops it from turning.

Finally, the core of the GFE peg is made from 4140 steel. Merritt have made this part small to allow for a thicker, stronger plastic sleeve.
