ECLAT MAVERICK CRANKS – REVIEW

Here we go. We love to see some variety in BMX part design – thank you guys, the Eclat Maverick cranks are just what the doctor ordered!

Éclat, started in 2008, is a parts company run by the same guys as Wethepeople. They say that simplicity is at the heart of their approach to product design, and that they’re constantly moving forward and pushing the boundaries to create innovative and exciting BMX parts that last longer than ever.

Put simply, they know what they’re doing. Their design work is always on point, their videos are awesome and their team absolutely shreds. With the likes of Ty Morrow, Devon Smillie, Alex Kennedy, Dan Coller and Sean Burns (to name but a few) running Éclat parts, you know you can count on them.

The Maverick cranks are beasts, plain and simple. You can see their strength straight away. Éclat know that the welds are usually the point where cranks are most vulnerable, so they decided to swerve the whole issue by cold forging the Mavericks out of 7000-series alloy. That means no weak spots.

This forged shape makes them look different – of course. With a smooth front and some recesses on the back to save weight and improve stiffness, it’s a pleasing design. We quite like the look, it reminds us of the old Primo Powerbites, in a good way. However, instead of the strange square spindle and pinch bolt, the Éclat Maverick cranks sit on a regular 48 spline spindle. They’ve achieved this with a heat treated chromoly insert and it helps clean up the overall appearance of the crank arm. They’ve got the same insert system going on for the pedal thread.

That spindle is nicely hollowed out to make it extra stiff and light. The whole package is beautifully machined and offers something a little different to regular cranks.
