KINK BMX: Ain’t No Love – Calvin Kosovich

A short BMX film about downtown Los Angeles by Christian Rigal

Christian Rigal teamed up with Calvin Kosovich for the absolutely splendid video you see above, Ain’t No Love. Shot for Kink BMX in LA, it’s a great little film that really gives you a sense of the place thanks to its dialled filming, editing and audio.

We were quite taken with it, so we asked Christian a few questions about how he made it happen…

– Christian, how did this ‘Ain’t No Love’ project come about?

“I’ve always wanted to shoot some kind of video in LA, but living in San Diego makes that a bit of a mission. I had already been driving back and fourth picking up some gear for a few projects so I hit up Calvin about this idea and he was stoked!

“LA is non stop, and it’s hard to put it all into perspective until you’ve actually ridden around and tried to film there.”

I didn’t have time to scout the city for spots, and really wasn’t familiar with it at all, which made it a lot harder and more time consuming. This started as a one day project and ended up being four, haha.”

– What were you trying to capture in this video?

“LA is non stop, and it’s hard to put it all into perspective until you’ve actually ridden around and tried to film there. All the odds are literally stacked against you, and we weren’t even after bangers, we just wanted to shoot some fun stuff, haha. My goal with this video was to really capture the vibe and feel of the city, I wanted people to feel like they were right there with us.”

– This feels more like a short film than a regular BMX edit… Was that how you wanted it to feel?

“Yeah my goal was to try an create something different with this one, it wasn’t about the tricks, the tricks were complimentary really. I just wanted to take the viewers for a ride through the city that truly captures all the madness you encounter each day. Hopefully it motivates you to get out an cruise around too, that’s what it’s all about!”

– I watched Ain’t No Love with headphones and it seems like you’ve put a lot of effort into the audio. Is that right? Did you have to record much extra stuff?

“Yeah I spent a ton of time making sure I captured all the right audio to bring this project to life. Downtown LA is never calm and quiet, but without the right audio, that can be hard to translate. I wanted you to be able to close your eyes and feel like you’re there.”

– What’s it like working with Calvin? Did you guys collaborate on the direction of the shots?

“Calvin’s one of my favorite guys to shoot with because he’s down for the mission and does whatever it takes to get the shot. I knew this project would be tough, not many guys can wake up hungover and still be excited to go film clips around LA at 6am, haha. He knew the city pretty well and had some trick ideas so we took that and winged it on the rest.”

– Going from dawn to dusk through the video works a treat. Were there any other conceptual parts that you were keen to include?

“Aside from shooting from sunrise to sunset, my main goal was to translate the non stop movement of the city in all of the clips, so I shot everything moving with the Freefly Systems M10. I skated for 95% of the film, then mixed in a couple drone shots and an escalator shot. It made filming the BMX tricks hard, as not all tricks work well rolling, so we had to pick ans choose wisely to make it all flow together the right way.”

– What’s next for you, do you want to make more videos in this kind of style?

“I’d love to shoot more conceptual videos like this, it’s a refreshing and different process that I need more of in my life! Haha. I think it was nice for Calvin too, it’s rewarding to make a film you’re stoked on that didn’t require breaking yourself off and filming non stop for a year.

I spend most all of my time filming crazy video parts too, so it was really fun taking a step back and working on something chill with more direction. I’ve got a few ideas for this year already!”
