VANS: Ride UK Hijack

Vans Takeover of Ride UK Channels

In the build up to the long anticipated Vans ILLUSTRATED BMX Movie, we’ve given Vans and their athletes control over the Ride UK channels to post whatever content they want. During the week long #vanshijack you can expect to see some classic edits from the Vans archive, the videos that inspired the Vans team, their chosen riders to look out for, plus a host of content being shared from their personal social accounts.

The ILLUSTRATED movie is set to premiere globally this weekend and will even be boadcast live by Transworld Ride BMX. The teasers have already been getting people hyped, and with full length films being such a  rarity these days, this one,  coming from a brand like Vans, is very exciting news. With such a broad range of incredible Worldwide riding talent ranging from Dan Lacey, Kevin Paraza, Gary Young and Tyler Fernengel to name but a few, there should be something in there for everyone, and the riding will undoubtedly be some of the best we’ve ever seen. This film is set to make history.

We caught up with a few of the European Vans Athletes to ask them a couple of questions on what it’s like to be part of the Vans family.

– What’s it like being part of the Vans team? Is it really like the big family it portrays?

“Yes 100%. I felt it when I first joined. All the dudes were down with each other and treated each other like brothers. I feel like I am part of that now and it’s dope. Shout out to Andy Zeiss and all the Vans Europe team.”

– What’s been your favourite Vans trip and why?

“Both Oregon trips we did were incredible. Every element of the trip was amazing. The crew was solid, the scenery was spectacular, the skateparks were incredible, and camping is always better than hotels or couch surfing.”

– Favourite Vans shoe to ride in and favourite to chill in?

“Ride – TNTs/Half Cabs. Chill – ISO lightweights”

– What else have you been up to recently? Non Vans related. Any projects we should know about?

“I’ve been shooting for one of those Monster/Ride US Ramp II videos. I’ve also been doing some postproduction on a few projects that will be released soon.”

– Favourite spot to ride in the UK.

Vicky Park – London.”

–  Your favourite BMX edit / movie of all time?

Errr, Who Bought The Dicks, Markit Zero, ah man there’s so many.

– What’s it like being part of the Vans team? Is it really like the big family it portrays?

“100%. Mad Jon Taylor is the UK team manager and he’s the sickest guy. Always looking after us, getting us in to amazing events, comes out with us riding, chilling, and sometimes he even comes OUT OUT! I think pretty much most, if not all of the Vans riders I’ve met and hung out with are always rad and just the sort of people I’d hang out with regardless to whether they ride BMX.”

– What’s been your favourite Vans trip and why?

“I haven’t been on any Vans trips yet, but I did go to the Vans warehouse in Cali, that place was mental! Can’t wait for a Vans trip though, they always look amazing.”

– Favourite Vans shoe to ride in and favourite to chill in?

“My perfect shoe to ride in is the “Half Cab“. It’s got amazing grip, heel and ankle protection while still looking like a slim low shoe. For chilling, my favourite shoe is the “Iso 1.5/2” they look so sick and are the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn.”

– What else have you been up to recently? Non-Vans related. Any projects we should know about?

“I’ve just been working loads, I’m now a qualified electrician and trying to ride as much as I can in between. I have been planning a pretty mental project/trip, which should be happening pretty soon, but for now I’m keeping it on the DL. You’ll have to wait and see, it’ll be interesting though.”

After years and years of endless revision and exams today I passed my final exam and am now a fully qualified electrician!! Muma Aleppo was well happy!! Now hopefully i can spend more time on my BMX ????????????????

– Favourite spot to ride in the UK.

“I haven’t been there in a while, but Hoxton ledges in east London, it’s only like three big ledges in a row, but it’s under cover so you can ride it in the rain.”

– Your favourite BMX edit / movie of all time?
“My favourite BMX DVD of all time is probably Cult Let ’em Talk,  we used to watch it like everyday.”

– What’s it like being part of the Vans team? Is it really like the big family it portrays?

“Oh yeah for sure, everyone gets on with each other really well. Whether we’re riding or chilling everyone has a laugh together, you can’t ask for much more from teammates really.”

– What’s been your favourite Vans trip and why?

“My favourite was the Vans Ride to Glory trip that we did a few years ago. We went to California which actually meant we broke the rules and got disqualified.. It was well worth it.”

– Favourite Vans shoe to ride in and favourite to chill in?

– Favourite spot to ride in the UK?

“Clydeside ledges in Glasgow”

– Your favourite BMX edit / movie of all time?

– What’s it like being part of the Vans team? Is it really like the big family it portrays?

“Yes it is! Being a part of Vans is a honour, it’s such an amazing company that have had my back for years, way before I rode for them. I’m so stoked to be a part of it all! From the different riders to the manager Andy, everyone looks out for each other. And it’s because the product is good, they still feel like they’ve got the core industries at the heart of it all.”

– Favourite vans trip and why?

It’s got to be Oregon. The crew was awesome and we rode the most insane parks I’ve ever seen. We camped out every night in the most beautiful locations, real simple living with good people!

– Favourite vans shoe to ride in and favourite to chill in?

Ride – Gilbert Crocketts  / Chill – Eras

– What else have you been up to recently?

“Literally, my life has been gym and physio, trying to sort my ankle out. I really fucked it, and I want it to get back to feeling 100%, so it’s got to be done. Recovery is long, but you have to do it right if you’re to get back anywhere near your original fitness, it’s worth the time and effort.

– What’s it like being part of the Vans team? Is it really like the big family it portrays?

“Being a part of Vans is really special. It’s definitely a family thing! Vans really look after you, and if you work hard, they reward you! What more could you ask for? It’s great being a part of it.”

– What’s been your favourite Vans trip and why?

“100% the northwest trips to Oregon. Just being with a good tight crew with no bitching. And being outside in the wild, camping, eating and sleeping and chilling outside. Absolutely mega!”

– Favourite Vans shoe to ride in and favourite to chill in?

“I’m not to fussy on what I ride, as long as it’s mid to high, for support on my ankles. So I guess halfcabs, maybe for riding and chilling actually.”

– What else have you been up to recently? Non-Vans related. Any projects we should know about?

“Recently I’ve been riding locally a lot, with friends. And been working on my home. Although I am working on something bigger!!! You’ll have to wait though.”

Your favourite BMX edit / movie of all time?

“Little devil – Criminal Mischief! I’m still a really big fan of all those riders! Garret Byrnes, Van, Beringer. Proper bike riders.”

– What’s it like being part of the Vans team? Is it really like the big family it portrays?

“It’s exactly what you’d want it to be like, it’s awesome and I love being part of it.”

– What’s been your favourite Vans trip and why?

“All the times that I have spent with Mike King in London, even though it is not a ‘trip’. It’s a week or so that we spend in a small group, with Mike filming, someone taking photos and others like Dan Boiski. It’s such a chilled environment, everyone is happy and there’s no pressure to get anything done on certain days or certain times – the perfect recipe with a great outcome.”

– Favourite Vans shoe to ride in and favourite to chill in?

“In my opinion, for riding, it’s the Half Cabs, just a really nice feeling shoe with lots of ankle support. As for chilling, I would have to say the No Skools. Super comfortable and an iconic shoe.”

– Favourite spot to ride in the UK

“I don’t have one particular favourite spot, it sounds cliché – but I don’t really care where I ride, as long as I’m with my friends and having fun.”

– Your favourite BMX edit / movie of all time?

“That’s a really tricky question, I couldn’t pick just one. Some of my favourite edits to watch are either from Bruce Crisman, Ian Schwartz and Matt Roe. If I’m ever watching riding edits theirs would be the first ones. As for movies, favourite riding movie would be Lotek Mixtape.”

– What’s it like being part of the Vans team? Is it really like the big family it portrays?

“It’s rad being a part of something that’s been around for so long and has always supported extreme sports. Especially when I’ve looked up to a lot of the older guys who’s been riding for Vans for years! It 100% feels like a family, more so when you go to big events and Steve Van Doren, the man himself, is behind the BBQ holding it down!”

– What’s been your favourite Vans trip and why?

“I’ve only ever been on the one trip with Vans and that was to Oregon, and to be fair, I probably will never top it. Camping out every night, having BBQs, going to insane swimming spots and riding some of the best and biggest concrete bowls Oregon has to offer. Hands down the best trip I’ve ever been on, plus all the Vans euro boys made the trip that much better!”

– Favourite Vans shoe to ride in and favourite to chill in?

Sk8 hi is my favourite choice to ride in lately. Favourite chilling shoes have got to be Vans ISO 1.5 they’re literally the comfiest shoe that have ever graced my feet!”

– Favourite spot to ride in the UK

“Haven’t really got a favourite spot to ride as such, but my local park Swalecliffe is pretty rad, always a good vibe and session to be had down there. It’s the place to be in the summer, it’s right next to the beach but also the worst place to be when the winds coming off the sea! Can’t have it all man!”

– Your favourite BMX edit / movie of all time?

“Got to be the first Brighton Ain’t Ready! First proper full length video I watched when I started riding. The music, the different styles of riding, the whole vibe of it is just sick.”
