BIKE CHECK: Jake Ellis

Photos by Stephen Smith
Intro by Robin Pearson

The first time I met Jake Ellis (aka JELLIS) was in a hostel in Barcelona. If I’m being honest, I wasn’t taken with him straight away… The day I arrived, everyone was pumped to go out and ride but he just wanted to chill all day in the room. Each to their own, I suppose!

Don’t worry, I soon warmed to him. He is totally one of the boys, really easy to get along with and keeps it pretty chilled – unless it’s time for Nasty Mondays in Barcelona…

Jellis rides with a pretty different style to most. On that first trip and at every session I’ve had with him since, he’s managed to surprise me every time with the stuff he comes up with. He totally kills it in his own way and it’s refreshing to see. Right now he’s out in California for a month, shredding in the sunshine on a totally fresh bike, and sent over these rad photos from the Full Factory warehouse.

Big up the Jellis!

Full holiday mode! Tuck no hander to flat.
Turndown fakie as the sun goes down.

– How’s the bike feeling?
“So good! I switched from a 21.25” back to 21” which at first I didn’t think I would like, as well as going up to a 28 tooth sprocket but soon as I built it up and jumped on the pedals it felt banging.”

– How did you personally set it up?
“Nothing out the ordinary, just cut my bars down a tad. My pal Juan dialled the front wheel after I built it and flipped my cassette to left hand drive thats it really.”

– What’s the deal with the new bike, did you get hooked up?
“Yeah they hooked it up a treat. I got parts for my old bike earlier in May when I was last in Cali so it made sense this time to get a whole new bike. The guys have done so much for me. Sorting my new bike out, letting me and Stephen loose in the warehouse to shoot, helping me build it up, opening the ramps for us to ride and coming through with anything else I needed. They are so generous Juan/Phil/Sam and the rest of the guys I can’t thank them enough and I’m happy to rep Full Factory, Odyssey and Sunday.”

– What made you choose the frame? Something about the colour?
“Exactly that! At first I was set on a StreetSweeper but when I got out here and saw the colour I went with the Excelsior. Usually I’m so indecisive when it comes to frames and colours but this time it was an easy decision.”

– You got a favourite thing about the new steed?
“It’s definitely the frame, but besides that I’d say the tripod seat. I hadn’t had one before, they look so clean, it’s such a good design.”

– Are you working on an edit out there as well?
“Nah, no edit this time around, I got a few clips on my phone but that’s about it. Hopefully I’ll be coming back next year to film. We’ve started in London though, I’ve already got some clips I’m stoked on and we’re gonna keep filming through the winter.”

– What else is there to tell?
“Staying in California for 3 weeks which I’m hyped on, managed to swerve the English weather for a bit and ride some heavy spots! Its always a good time out here and cruising on a new bike is making it that much better.”

– Any last words?
“Just thanks to a few people,
Robin Pearson for always being the dude!
Stephen Smith for being a boss and taking the time to shoot this.
Full Factory Distribution, Odyssey BMX, Sunday BMX.

The homies in LA for letting me come out and always being solid!
The homies at home for being G’s!
@beigeduffy for always clipping.
@jaxmackson for constantly shooting photos.
