Behind the scenes: Carhartt Gran Canaria project

Dominic Wrobel who runs German/International website Woozy BMX has been busy editing up a full length feature web video for Carhartt from their late summer trip to Gran Caneria. The whole project is quite special, not only is it so because of the rider list (Stefan Lantschner, Bruno Hoffmann, Owain Clegg, Ben Hennon, Hannu Cools, Arthur Dietrich, Paddy Gross, Barry Koehne, Benny Paulsen) but because it’s a web project DVD, possibly the first of it’s kind. The whole concept will have a special feature website with lots of additions such as bike checks and photo galleries. We caught up with Dominic for some background info on it all…

What are you editing right now?
I am currently doing some fine-tuning on the Carhartt Gran Canaria Ravage Roadtrip Video and after this I will work on a little shortfilm i just shot with my Canon 5d mark2 – that camera makes me go crazy! Its so much fun! I have used several 35mm adapters…but this is better! I just finished some fresh Props ads for woozybmx.com aswell. These were over 2 years old. I found out after Chris Rye emailed me about it.

What’s Gran Caneria like?
Pretty chilled – the general public didnt seem as chilled as the Spain i know about though (I can only speak for Barcelona or Malaga). Good spots, good weather, palm trees, can you ask for more?  Loved it. Some places were a bust but i am sure there are lots more spots to find in that place. The locals were pretty friendly too.

Who went on the trip?
Stefan Lantschner, Bruno Hoffmann, Owain Clegg, Ben Hennon, Hannu Cools, Arthur Dietrich (was sick the whole trip), Paddy Gross, Barry Koehne, Benny Paulsen, Georg Oberlechner, Andy Zeiss, Mike Emde (team manager) and myself…..

Who was your favorite rider on the trip?
Everyone was pretty good to work and have fun with!

Did you film and edit the whole thing (and with what equipment)?
Yep, I was the only filmer on the trip which can be a little stressful when you have a crew of 10+ people to shoot with. It all went well though! When I’m on a trip like this I usually shoot with two videocameras. One on a tripod and another one in my hands for fisheye and moving long-lense. I am currently working with the Sony FX-1 HD and Century HD Fisheyes. And i just purchased a 5d Mark2 for Future Projects. I edit on different Macs / Final Cut Pro.

And it’s going to be released on a special website?
That’s the plan. I will work on a special “Movie-Style” website but of course the whole thing will be embedable for all the other sites that want to feature that thing. The site will include lots of bonus material such as video bikechecks, Stefan Lantschner´s Cribs (it was a joke by the way) and photogalleries. The Video will be available in HD but also if you still have your 1996 WIndows PC the Youtube version will be there for you!

How long has it taken you to make?
All in, probably two months. For a web production thats my personal record! Haha. It’s kind of a bigger production. You know that Carhartt has lots of stylish artwork, designs, etc so I just had a meeting with Mike Emde who is their BMX-Team-Marketing-good-times-Manager and we discussed some details. I think its good when a brand understands that a web project is at least as much important as a DVD project these days. Props to Mike for this.

What tunes are you using?
Carhartt´s Combination Record Label has some chilled stuff that i am happy to use but of course there will be some rock tunes in there to keep you awake!

When will it be finished?
Early March. Thanks for your interest!

Check out this Fit / Owain Clegg bike check that came out of the trip…
