JOE EMBREY: 9 Longs, 1 Fish – Gallery

Embrey's timeless style captured by Stu Barnham ten times

“Riding and shooting photos with Stu for many years, I’ve learnt he’s always had a great eye for getting the most from a spot and trick – even when the spots (or tricks) haven’t been the best, I’ve always been stoked with the photos we’ve managed to come away with!

On the many missions while filming for the Five/Ten edit over the last year [scroll down for video], we noticed the photos were following a particular theme, with more use of long shots and leaving more space for the foreground and background rather than the over-use of fisheye we’ve sometimes fallen into. We decided to carry this theme on, as it also seemed like a cool way to remember all the sessions and sometimes weird situations that happened while out riding.

The lockdown has been a good chance to look back on the photos, some of these trips and sessions. You take it for granted how good getting out and about to weird places with the crew is! Can’t wait to get back out there!” – Joe Embrey

“We spotted this setup while scouring a housing estate in Norwich for something to ride. We were close to calling it a day, but couldn’t leave without doing something on this. Curtains were twitching so it had to be one go only. My wheel was a bit close to the edge for comfort! Would love to see someone go back and do the feeble from the garage roof!” – Joe

“On the hottest day of the summer of 2019, myself and Joe met up after work and made the trip to the new Beccles skatepark we’d heard had recently been completed. We were surprised to find it empty apart from one severely dehydrated scooter kid who was flaked out and looked like he was about to have a heart attack. Weird start to the session.

We pretty much had the park to ourselves for the evening part from later into the evening when a rather tubby chap showed up, disappeared for a bit then re-appeared having been beaten up by some Beccles weirdos on the fields near the park – strange place clearly, but the park is awesome. Joe rode every bit of it and put his finely tuned trick list to work.” – Stu

“I spotted this set up on one of my after work spot hunts around Norwich, it’s a support structure for a bridge over the river. It’s not much of a spot, nothing’s really on a plate at this spot what with an awkward run up and bollards everywhere but I knew Joe could make something of it and make it look good. Turned out the simplest idea worked best so we went with the steezy hop through the white beams.” – Stu
