A little while back, the good guys at Folkestone 51 invited us to ride their new skatepark.  You know the place, it’s the world’s first multi-storey concrete skatepark, being built in Folkestone, Kent, UK.

Well, actually, it’s not quite a skatepark yet.  What was on offer was the rough under layer of the bowls, purely structural, ready for Maverick Skateparks to add a proper riding surface onto.  Still, it looked fun, so we sent Greg Illingworth and Stuart Chisholm along to give it a test ride.  Our man Martin Grainger was there to capture the short session – see the video above.

We caught up with Maverick’s Sam Reynolds about this strange building project and asked a few questions about the progress over there.

Q&A with Maverick Skateparks

– How is it going so far?

The build is progressing nicely… Steels are being set and we are getting ready to pour the first concrete and set the pool copings / tiles.

It’s super exciting to it all come together now after years of planning and preparation.

– How come there was a rough surface and then the bit you’re doing now?

The first layer is structural and this final Maverick layer is purely for performance!

– Is this build very different to projects you’ve done in the past?

It’s a world first – suspended concrete bowls on the 1st floor of a multi story skatepark.
This is extremely different to any build we have ever seen.

– When do you think the build will be finished?

The skatepark is scheduled to open summer 2020.
