FRIDAY RANDOMS: Repurposed Bike Parts

When a bike part breaks, most of us BMXers tend to just chuck it in the bin then quickly move on to something new – often not much thought is given to what the old part can be used for. I know a few riders who have ‘BMX Graveyards’ in their garage/shed, a large number of mid-school frames are just left to hang on the wall as a trophy or memento of simple times.

However, there are a select few creative individuals who saw this ‘useless’ hunk of scrap metal as an opportunity to create something unique and rather special. That’s what this weeks article is all about. Creativity.

Here’s a few examples of what can be done if you put your mind to it, (it also helps if you’re mechanically-minded and have access to a grinder and/or welder. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said “that’s cool as hell” to myself while writing this article, have a look and then use your old scrap parts to create something incredible!

BMX Forks Selfie Stick – Zeta Intan

Cracked/snapped/bent forks? Not to worry…  You can do exactly like this guy did and turn them into a selfie stick. The only downside is, you’re set with a standard length and it’ll be pretty damn heavy to carry around with you. Daft, yet brilliant idea!

ODI Grip Gear Shifter

Found online, I’ve got no idea who to give the credit to but it was originally posted on a Scion FR-S Forum. Anyway… Sick use for an ODI lock on grip!

Wall of Shame – Luke Shaw

The aforementioned ‘Wall of Shame.’ Not quite re purposing parts, but in regards to decorating your pad it’s a straight 10/10 for me. Why not eh…?

Helmet Holder – Daniel Mulhare

So you’re done riding for the day, you get home and take your lid off but there’s nowhere to hang it so that it airs out all of the sweat accumulated from a hard day’s ride. A bit of shoelace, some old knackered forks and a bit of neon lighting to make it look cool… Problem solved.

For The Office – BMX Inner Tube Tie

When you work an office job, but the BMXer within can’t be restrained. Not even joking. I would 100% wear this tie to work every day if I had one. So sick!

Retired Frame Bike Stand

These aren’t BMX frames but whatever… This is a pretty cool idea! Why retire an old frame when you can collect a few then make them into a sick bike stand?

BMX Table – Tyler Pinsonnault

Here’s another quality invention I stumbled upon. Rasta parts died out quicker than the dodo, and what better use for a set of wheels and bars could you think of than making a table out of them? Top work…

Greasebugs Gear

Andrea Martin has been working with bike parts to create unique art for her friends, family and customers for some time now. She even did me a Ride UK BMX key ring which I still have on my keys to this day! As far as repurposing bike parts goes, she’s the bee’s knees. Be sure to check out her page Greasebugs Gear if you get a chance.
