2016 BEST EDITS: Round 2 – The Underdogs

I like the big headline BMX videos as much as the next man, but there’s always been something appealing with the content that stays more underground.

Everyone makes videos for their own reasons – whether it’s for fun, for a sponsor, or just to have something to look back on. Browsing through 2016’s best edits that we featured on our website, I found myself drawn to those edits that were just for fun, with no agenda other than to show off the good times being had on a BMX bike.

A lot of the videos are very high quality, but yeah, some of the filming isn’t exactly pro and some of the editing is a bit wacky. That’s why they’re so good – it’s unpolished, pure BMX. The vibes are bang on point and make you want to be part of the fun.

Here’s our rundown of the best of the underdogs from last year.

INFAMOUS: Neanderfools

A typically understated London street video with some seriously impressive riding. Legit.

WINBORNE: Pubtopia

The WiNborne guys from Dorset know how to have a good time, that’s for sure! They struck up a sweet friendship with one of their local pubs and now look what they have in the garden… A miniramp, a dirt jump, and a bloody full pipe! Amazing work. This video is pure good vibes – BMX from some great dudes like Anthony Pill, Rob Ridge and Phil Aller, really decent miniramp skating, good tune, good filming… Magic.

BUCKLIFE 2016

Legit trails and all the nonsense that goes along with a well-travelled crew of riders. Funny and mental. Just wait for the dancing…

FBM: Neil Hise

This may be a few years old but it was put online in 2016, so that counts. Plus, it totally rules so I have no issue with posting it in this list. Mid-school Props-esque magic.

NORTHEAST BAD BOYS: Obsolete Vol. II

This is pure BMX – cruising trails, riding bowls, hitting the streets, emptying pools, messing around, crashing, drinking a few cold ones… If you were worried about the state of BMX culture, let this put you right.

WHERE’S THE WATER? 2016 Mixtape

Every now and then, a UK crew mixtape comes out that absolutely nails it. When you’ve decent, varied riding, the right music, when it’s nicely put together and the vibe gets people outside of that crew stoked, you know it’s a good one.

MICHAEL JORDAN: USA Tripping

If you know MJ, you’ll know he runs things pretty loose… This edit documents his loose goose journey around America with his mate John. It’s pretty raw, the soundtrack is random, but it looks like they had a truly awesome time! Very entertaining.

METAL PEGS: Winter of Discontent

Very much an underground effort, this is an honest group of riders who do things for themselves because that’s how they like it. Riding clips are interspersed with moments that start to provide a kind of social commentary. Winter street riding is captured well in this edit, with a simple approach to filming and video making, this is legit.

APACHE: Trip 2016

One for the concrete skatepark fans, pool guys, bowl riders, skaters and road trip enthusiasts. This video simply screams good times. Amazing Spanish Basque country spots, tight crew, the dream trip.

FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE II

This could well be the best video of last year. Absolutely no fucks given – the crew sent it over wild jumps and Remy Archer captured everything exceptionally well. The ‘extras’ towards the end are rather special, too…

LSF2: Jeff With Glasses

Classic street! Perfect use of spots, interesting grinds, gaps… Jeff handles it all perfectly. There are some seriously unlikely grind moves in this video. An inspiration!

YATETAPE: YT3

Straight outta Bristol. Pure street, this is so rad! There’s a good variety of spots and riding styles, all captured nicely on the VX.

ROB RIDGE: A Pinch of Salt

This article draws to a bittersweet end with this video – the tech wizard Rob Ridge saying goodbye to his beloved skatepark, The Trick Factory. He managed to see it off with a bang (well, several) and got some truly incredible footage in the process.
