Feeling comfortable hitting quarters with a bit of speed? Manuals on the deck can put that to good use. Find a long quarter with a wide and empty deck and give it a go.
Tip: Use the left / right arrow keys

01
Approach the quarter at a comfortable speed, not so much that you’ll end up hitting the backrail, but just enough so you can pop out and carve back in without having to pedal.

02
Carve up the ramp so that when you pop out of the top you’re facing down the deck. You don’t want to fly out too high so keep compressed down as you pop out of the top.

03
You’ll find that you’ve still got a lot of speed as you come up onto the deck; it’s important to stay in control of the bike. Keep the front end up, but don’t pull up too much as you could loop out.

04
The main thing to remember about manualing on a ramp is that the balance point, which we explained on pages 48 – 49, is the same here as it would be on flat. Try and find this as soon as you land, it’ll make the whole trick much smoother. As you start the manual, remember to keep carving back towards the ramp. Just lean in towards the coping slightly and you should feel yourself turning in a mellow arc.
