SPOT CHECK: The Junkyard Skatepark

A Unique Riding Experience

The Junkyard provides a pretty unique riding experience that’s for sure. A far cry from the grandiose bowl setups by the likes of Corby and Unit3Sixty, the Junkyard comprises of what appears to be a simple setup in a fairly small space. This tight space though is what gives it its unique character, because from the very moment you drop in you’re faced with a transition, hip, wall or spine etc. and you’re forced into making snap decisions. Initially it’s tricky to get your head around, but give it a few minutes and you’ll slowly unlock the Junkyard’s secrets, or find yourself to be pinged about like a pinball. It’s super fun either way. Thanks to the cradle and the vert walls your speed never dwindles, so provided you can think fast enough you’re guaranteed an awesome ride!

Martyn Tambling, one of the nicest people in BMX.

For those of you that have come into contact with the Tamblings before, you’ll know they’re a welcoming bunch, which really makes a difference when running a place like this. If you’re a seasoned rider, then you know Martyn will be around to give you some tips on the place and most probably have a shred with you, or if you’re a parent dropping your kids off for the day, it’s a reassuring sight to see the family atmosphere. Everyone, no matter what their ability, are in safe hands. You visit once, and feel like you’ve been riding there all your life.

As well as the bowl room, they have just opened up a small street plaza setup with moveable rails, for the more street inclined riders, and again, it caters for all abilities, you can move the setup to suit your needs. With this room, they’ve also managed to get a decent kitchen and chill out area built too, making the whole experience not only a fun, but comfortable day out.

The creative way in which this space has been used is inspired, providing an easy and non-intimidating learning platform for the very beginner, to a roller-coaster ride/brain workout for the best in the game. So next time you’re in the South West do yourself a favour and get down there, it’ll be a session you won’t forget in a hurry!
