FRIDAY RANDOMS: RAD DADS!

You can’t beat that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you see a Dad (or Mum) taking interest in their son’s or daughter’s life and can see the kid enjoying themselves in the process. I’ve seen videos on FB & YouTube featuring a few ‘Rad Dads’ – whether it’s riding BMX with their kids, taking them to a skatepark, or even adapting special apparatus to help them shred. Don’t call judge me, but it never really phased me or made a massive impression apart from thinking, “Yeah, that’s pretty cool.”

However, now I’m due to be a father in April, videos like these have started to hit home. The closer it gets to my missus’ due date, the more I want to be a RAD DAD too…

I thought this Friday we could go for a ‘serious’ topic and still have a little fun with it along the way too (look out for the last video – LOL)

Dad Helps His Son In A Wheelchair Shred Some Ramps.

This had to be #1 on my list. I’m sure a lot of you may have spotted this vid when we shared it last month, it’s such a heartwarming vid – the smiles and reactions of the kid really made my day. It’s an awesome thing to do as a father and it’s clear his son Atticus absolutely loves hitting those transitions! I couldn’t help but think if the dad had some roller blades it could be endless fun of pumping around bowls (could be slightly dangerous though…)

Now this is what I’m talkin’ about! You can’t get any more RAD than having a session at the local with your Dad. Mark Ducat fired up this video on Insta and our RideUKBMX Group saying, “Not bad for a 48 year old ???? Good riding with my dad.” Needless to say a bunch of people (including myself) were quick to congratulate his father Hugh for being such a RAD DAD! Hats off to you sir, dude can even send flips like a boss…

Dad At Skatepark Pressures Kid Into Dropping In.

OK, so this one’s a bit of a social experiment. I usually hate these kind of videos, but this was actually pretty funny to watch. A ‘dad’ takes his ‘son’ on a bit of a crash course in the local park with a homemade kicker ramp which he tries to get his son to drop in on… The dad loses it and starts to be a bit demanding of his son who “doesn’t want to do it..” Then in steps the nearby random stranger who will have to make a judgement call whether to push the young boy in a positive way to face his fears, or just tell the dad he’s being a dick… The outcome is definitely worth watching in each one!

4 Year Old BMX Twins.

Anyone remember this vid from a while back? Two of the coolest little kids I’ve ever seen, Jake and Theo, were on a road trip with their parents and decided to hit some parks up on the way… Parenting done right!

Broc Raiford & His Dad’s Journey To Pro.

This video from Red Bull featuring Broc & Ryan Raiford really made me think about how much of a positive impact it can have on your riding career if your dad is totally into what you do. Ryan Raiford is everything a BMX Dad should be and more, he’s been such an influential figure in Broc’s life and has been fully supportive of his son’s choices in life. Massive amounts of respect to both you guys!

And last but not least we have everyone’s favourite Ex-Convict BMX Dad Terry Greengrass with his son Kane. This is more of a ‘what not to do’ if you were a parent, absolutely hilarious still… Had to give it another watch!

Pat Casey is another RAD DAD for sure, one of the sickest riders around and, who knows, I guess young Casey may be a future shredder too…
