2016 ROUND UP: Greg Illingworth

Every time we do these yearly round ups, Greg is at the top of our list. He’s one of the best respected, most productive riders out there today. I’m not saying he releases a new edit every week, but when you look back at twelve months on the bike it’s incredible to see how many amazing projects Greg has been part of.

Take a look at his reflections on the past year and just imagine what might be coming up in 2017 for Greg…

Green Bike

“First time I’ve tried something like that and it was rad. Random people would stop me in the street and compliment the bike when it was still fresh. It was never my favourite colour, nor did it suit me particularly in my opinion, but it was something different and inspiring for a little while.”

“The new bowl at the spot is a super fun addition and that hip is mint! That whole project was interesting. I’ve never really seen anything like that although similar ideas had crossed my mind. I was stoked on how Robin executed the whole thing, and I’d love to get a small print some time.”

Night Harvest Jam

“Amazing trails set in between massive mountains and the ocean in the the most beautiful city in the world, perfect weather and better jumps every year. Add the night time factor, spot lights, alcohol, and a DJ… and well. It’s a party. I truly love this jam.”

Mongoose Jam UK

“I was really stoked that Mongoose decided to do a jam in the UK this year. It was cool seeing a park contest of that magnitude in the UK, with that many pro riders. The inclusion of ams is always a nice touch. Not only for the sake of them getting to ride in the contest but also for the atmosphere that their friends and families brought into the park.”

Mongoose Video Jam

“Other than wrecking my ankle on day 1, this was the best Mongoose Jam yet for me. I see riding from a perspective of finding unique and challenging things to do on my bike and capture them if possible, and enjoying it! Normal jam style or run style contests can take some of the enjoyment out of it. I also find it difficult to do my best riding in that kind of format. I just prefer making videos and this was fun as hell!”

‘The Ramp II’ Edit

“Another super fun project to work on. I like riding street and ramps, so getting to combine the two made for a weird and good time. It was harder than expected to find spots to be honest, for some reason I (like some of the other dudes), searched hard for spots that wouldn’t be rideable without the ramp. In hindsight that’s a bit limiting for no reason really. It’s just fun right?”

Transworld Ride Cover

“This came as a surprise and I will always see it as one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me. Everyone in BMX knows that cover is reserved for the most bad ass riders in the world, usually top notch American pros. I never even dreamed this ginger moron from South Africa would make it.”

‘Lost in Transition’ Edit

“This project was hit or miss from the get go. It was an expensive trip, done on relatively short notice, with time restrictions, sketchy weather, a strong language barrier, and the possibility of being shut down my Japanese police. Even more concerning for me to be honest was if we didn’t get sufficient footage for a good video in the style we wanted with enough riding so people would enjoy it.

Sponsors put in a fair amount of money and BMX online viewers can be pretty ruthless if they don’t like it. I always knew it would be a sick trip though. Japan is one of my favourite places in the world and just getting to ride anything new and different is always rad. We had a good crew and we managed to pull it off I suppose and the response was good.

This project also led to me and Kalkoff sharing the cover of Dig Magazine issue 99.5… which of course is another massive honour which I assumed would never happen. Fraser made an amazing video and George Marshall killed it with the photos.”

“The best thing to happen to BMX in 2016.”

Moving to Hastings

On the TO DO List for about 12 years, I can finally scratch that one off! #homeowner Thank you @stinailves for sticking by me, trusting me, and supporting me on this mission. I cannot wait to experience this new chapter of our lives together. #Hastings #hastingshop #dfl #warriorsquare #warriorsperch

New Bike – December 2016

“Ah this one is sick! Custom G.I. Mongoose made in the UK by Ted James. Keeping it raw for now to show off the metal and welds. It looks rad and I’m sure by the time people are reading this there’ll be a bike check with some more pics out somewhere.”
