You guys have been great in past debates, so we figured yesterday would be a good time to throw out there the “Mini BMX”, and try to work out what the general feeling was about these things.
We asked if you thought these were a bit of fun? Or a complete joke?
Ryan Cullen went straight for the jugular “It’s just plain stupidity, it cant be taken seriously, it’s not for me, it’s taking the piss out of BMX.” Watching a full grown man riding one of these things does look pretty ridiculous! But as Ryan Taylor’s edit below shows, he’s clearly just having a laugh right? Fraser thinks so “I don’t see why people are getting their knickers in a twist about it like, they’re just a bit of fun. Hell, if it actually does take off as a serious sport, wouldn’t it be better than scootering? What if scooter kids wanted to ride those instead? Problem solved possibly..”
It wouldn’t be long before the scooter connection was thrown into the mix Dave at Rad BMX Shop hit us up on Instagram “We tried one in the shop, it was fun for about 5 mins, everyone fell off a few times then it just gathered dust. Bit of fun, but no longevity. Marginally better than a scooter though.” Street Dave, who’s just coming back from a serious face injury via a fall on an actual BMX bike said “As long as they stay behind closed doors in the park and out the way that’s fine.” It’s pretty obvious that Street Dave mostly rides outside the walls of a skatepark, so generally he doesn’t come into any contact with Mini BMX’s or Scooters. Many of you were into them though, with the likes of Brian Thompson on the market for one “Looks like a piss larf, defo want one!” and Reece Hepburn “Im just away to order my one!:-)”. Will it be 5 mins of fun for these guys or as Thomas Rooker puts it “It’s all good fun till people start taking it seriously.”
Mini BMX’s look to be a passing fad, which have probably ran their course already. Will we see them in place of the already fading scooter trend? unlikely. Will they have a serious affect on the BMX economy? Again, highly unlikely. These appear to be a storm in a teacup right now generating good debate on social networks. If these things were perched at the top of quarters, alongside scooters on a Saturday afternoon, I think it’s fair to say we’d all want to throw ourselves off the nearest cliff. As it stands, we’re still safe.
