Newcastle BMX Jam 2016

Just over a week ago the Newcastle BBQ + BMX Peg Sesh took place and I can safely say that most of the North East BMX community have been waiting for this video to drop… Ryan Lilburn has been inundated with the daunting task of sorting through literally hundreds of clips, (pretty sure it was somewhere in the 600+ region!) then he had the pleasure of producing a quality edit. No pressure then! I had no doubt in my mind whatsoever that Ryan would put together something pretty special with the footage he captured and was well-impressed with the result!

The BMX Jam is poppin' off at Newcastle 5 Bridges. Off to the wasteland next…

The jam started off at Newcastle’s prime undercover BMX location, 5 Bridges. Mainly because it was pissing down the night before and the weather was looking pretty uncertain on the day of the jam. No worries though, us northerners are made of tough stuff and a few were even riding in T shirts as the grim weather loomed above us.

We were in luck though, after a few hours riding at 5 B’s it started to dry up quite well so we took the opportunity to mooch over to The Wasteland. This is another quality spot built by both riders and skaters from Newcastle’s community and it’s such a sick place. New rails were added, a new ledge and a few little jibs here and there. (Kriss Kyle seemed pretty impressed when he visited a few days prior to the jam.) – The whole idea of the jam was orchestrated by Harry Dyson of the NSFYC. His idea was to throw this jam, sell some burgers and put the money back into making some improvements to the wasteland. No profit, all for BMX. When he told me about this idea I was happy to help out, popped through with the local lads and filmed a few clips on the day. I even grabbed a brush and squeegee and got rid of a few pesky puddles.

H-Man from Streetphire was there on top form, torturing anyone and everyone with the megaphone he’d brought along. There were no fucks given on that day I can assure you! Everyone got it. As you’d imagine, this made for some top class entertainment. Highlights of the day for me had to be the silky smooth riding of Connor Bedford, Blakey Hiscock flaring stupidly small stuff and Anthony Armstrong flipping a crazy tight DIY jumpbox that’s hard enough to jump nevermind flip. Kids these days! There was also another shredder wearing a burgundy jacket who was doing the hardest stuff and making it look so easy but I can’t remember his name… My bad!

Overall, it was a great day for North East BMX and BMX as a whole I guess. It’s always great to see people coming together, no matter the weather to have a few beers with friends, ride some bikes and eat some burgers. Top work Harry D of the NSFYC. Hats off to you sir!
