GALLERY: Substance Beach Jam @ Unit 23

Words & photos: Adam Lievesley

As soon as I heard that Substance were putting on a jam at Unit 23 I was stoked. It’s been a minute since a legit jam took place at Unit 23, this one was to give Substance a send off as they close doors soon. And with a heavy hitting crew, I knew we were in for a treat.

The turnout was immense, especially as the weather was so bad… Extreme high winds and snow sweeping across the country, shutting roads, blowing over trees, picking up caravans and dropping them in peoples gardens…

The street jam kicked things off with a kids session. Some big tricks went down including a crank flip off the drop winning the jam. A classic ‘foot down’ with some special guests was next on the agenda before the big lads took to the Hall 2 street plaza.

The level of riding was amazing, with Dave Summertime and Lewy on the mic dishing out the Buckfast-fuelled abuse. Nathan Smith did an insane manual line with Stu Chisolm, Oscar and Jack Miller getting a shoutout. Michael Dickson won the jam with a special mention to Antonio Smallwood stomping an uprail decade.

The jam then moved to the famous ‘Little Devil’ bowl where the energy and noise was something else. The drinks had been flowing all day and the reaction to every trick was amazing. Bigger tricks went down, the noisier it got. Chanting and heckling brought out the goods. Henry Logan touching the roof, Connor Mailey with a big 270, Hector Spencer Wood with a beasty wall 180, Tom Russell landing his first flair to wood and of course bowl jam winner Kaz Campbell’s huge alley oop 360 footplant.

Huge shoutout to Si from Substance for putting on such a sick event and all the boys for making it what it was.
