FIRST LOOK: Oscar Daeche

RSI and Rural Life

Words and photos by Sam Box
Video filmed by the crew, edited by Oscar Daeche

Oscar is one of my oldest friends and as long as I have known him, he has been in love with BMX. I am always in awe of Oscar’s ability to commit to something for so long and continue to enjoy it unconditionally. His yearning to go bigger and better is a gift to me as a photographer and has allowed me to get some unique shots.

Full Name: Oscar Daeche

Age: 19
Occupation: Delivery driver

Hometown: The middle of nowhere
Current City: Exeter

Years riding: 5 years

Top three riders: Simone Barraco, Harry Mills-Wakley, Garrett Reynolds

How is life treating you, have you been riding much throughout the winter?

“Life is good, started a new job as a delivery driver which has been amazing for finding spots. The only problem is not being able to ride them as I’ve developed repetitive strain injury in both my wrists not too long ago. I haven’t been riding much at all because of that but I suppose this came at a good time with it being winter and all. I’m hoping I’ll get some good news from the physio so I can get back to the normal routine.”

You live out in the sticks, how has that been for riding over the years?

“Pretty tough but I always managed. My house is miles from the town where I went to school but having the desire to ride every minute of the day meant that I had to find a way. Fortunately for me, I have the nicest mum going. Every single day she would bring my bike and spare clothes in, drop them in my friends shed and pick me up in the evening! Biggest shoutout to mum for fuelling my BMX addiction over the years. As soon as I turned 17 I started driving which allowed me to ride when and where I wanted. Driving has been a game changer for me and my bike.”

You edited your video, when did you get into filming and editing?

“As soon as I started riding and watching BMX videos I was really interested in making them myself. The main hurdle I had to overcome was understanding the importance of investing in a decent camera and finding the money to get the gear to go with it. I went to college and studied media production which was fun but didn’t help with the sort of filming I would like to be doing. Since then I’ve been trying to make as many videos as possible. Learning editing techniques from youtube videos has been a big help. Through the whole of 2015 I made a monthly series of videos called SPAREPOTATOES. Essentially, this was me having a camera on me at all times, trying to film anything and everything from the Exeter crew. Everyone kills it so go check it out!”

What are your plans for 2016?

“I’m hoping 2016 will be a good year but I’m relying on a lot of things going to plan for it to happen. Obviously, my main goal is to get my wrists back to health so I can ride again. In the meantime I’m going skiing in February and then off to Australia for a couple months with a good friend, hopefully by the time I get back I’ll be good to get riding again. I’ve already started filming a full length part with James Curry (Proper). He’s been filming ‘Don’t Ask Questions’ mixtapes over the last year or so and wants to spend this year making a DVD and I’m really looking forward to the outcome. The whole of the Exeter crew (OTG) are making a full length video which will be out at the end of the year which I will also have a part in.”

Any final words/shout-outs?

“I want to shout out my friend James Holmes (GT Bikes) who runs a clothing company called Voyage Threads, he makes some sick garms and always keeps our crew stocked up. I’ve just finished a project with my good friend and United/Eclat/Etnies rider Harry Mills-Wakley, the video is for his Eclat 2015 part. Oh my, it is a banger, and will be out soon. The dude kills it and has one of the best styles in the game.

One last shout out to Sam Box for taking the sickest pictures no matter what he shoots, for always being up for a mission and for getting me this opportunity.

Life’s short, stunt it.”
