Paul Weston grew up riding the streets of Leeds, I’ve known him a long time. When we were kids he was part of the older crew that looked out for us, and it was cool. I hit him up last week and asked for a few songs that influenced him growing up riding. DJ Weston has his own show on Flex 103, here’s the latest. – Cleggy
In my over thirty years in BMX, music has always played a big part…
Since the late 70s I was a big fan of Evel Knievel, jumping over kids in the street on my Grifter, so it was inevitable that when BMX hit UK shores it was going to be the next move forward for me.
Here’s a few tracks that stood out for me, and perhaps many of you, if you’re of that certain vintage. And if you’re still a whipper snapper, this is the stuff we listened to on giant Walkmans attached to our belts.
The Specials: Message to you rudy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cntvEDbagAwThis track was playing on the TV when my Dad came through the door with my first ever BMX.. The Raleigh Burner
worlds famous supreme team: world famous
As breakdancing was also big at the peak of BMX, this track, along with other old electro hip hop was used on the Kelloggs BMX Championships in the freestyle section, when the UK saw the likes of Eddie Fiola and Mike Dominguez.
the prodigy: everybody is in the place
This is where it went wrong for alot of BMXers, but it had to be put in the mix… haha
acdc: highway to hell
This reminds me of hooking up with the underground hardcore UK riders that sailed through the decline of BMX, and came out of the otherside heroes. The old Seventies crew, Fids, Morris, Dan Price etc… Also, this featured on Seventies LIVID VHS from 1998, and equally inspirational video.
dr octogan (kool keith): earth people
As skateboarding became bigtime again in the early 90s they always had an amazing soundtrack to their videos, BMX street followed and this track stood out for me. Riding in the damp streets of Leeds with the hazy yellow glow of the lamps, and this in my headphones.
black sabbath: paranoid
The Dave Mirra Playstation era will know this one, on everyones walkman at the time, goosebumps…
Thanks for taking time out to read this, there are plenty more in the vaults, I could go on all day, but I hope you have enjoyed the selection and it takes you back… DJ WESTON
