Here’s the new 2014 United Martinez Pro Complete. Could it be getting to a point where we simply buy a complete bike rather than a new frame? Take this as an example, it retails at £559.99 and to be honest I could get on this and ride it fine! All I’d need is it be 21″ with a top load stem then this bike is good to go.
The aftermarket frames made by companies like United are still a far superior build to the complete bike frames, and for any really experienced rider are the way to go. Of course we can’t beat the attention to detail of USA built frames like S&M, FBM and Cult etc. The craftsmanship and material quality is the best.
Corey’s Beacon frame for example has tapered, seamless Japanese 4130 tubing. Heat treated head tube, BB and dropouts. Not to mention the whole custom design process and range of different size and colour options available which make a signature frame unique. Given how Corey rides, it’s pretty obvious he needs the very best built bike. For us mere mortals though his complete could be an option!
There’s no denying that complete bikes are getting better every year. I know Pete Sawyer rode a WeThePeople Volta straight from the box with no worries, prior to getting his signature products produced. Talking with many store owners here in the UK, a trend has occurred a number of times where a few riders will purchase a complete bike, strip it down and share the parts, as this is a cost effective way to get reliable and affordable products. Certainly something to think about as bikes become better quality and more affordable.
Would you consider a complete bike as an alternative option to a new frame?
