WHO IS? Aubree Henson

I first saw clips of Aubree Henson through lockdown, sessioning curbs and homemade wooden kickers outside her house. It took me back to learning to bunny hops over bricks outside my house. Since then she has come on in leaps and bounds. Her riding is insanely consistent, doing tricks like feeble hards and x-up rides. With the help of her dad she is becoming an amazing rider, not for a girl, not for her age but just an amazing rider.

I made the most of a pre-Backyard session at Asylum Skatepark to snap a few pics and hang out with her.

Q&A with Aubree Henson

– Hey Aubree, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where do you live, how old are you, how long have you been riding?

I’m Aubree, I’m 9 years old and live in the New Forest. I’ve been riding BMX for two and a half years now. I rode bikes before BMX, but just for fun with my dad.

– How did you get into riding? What was it that made you pick up a bike?

I’ve always done something with my dad every day. At first it was going to the playpark, and eventually it was going on bike rides together. He got me my first BMX for Christmas in 2019, and I haven’t ridden anything else since. It was instant love!

“One day I got some pegs and had the most fun I’ve ever had. I’ve been feebling ever since, literally!”

– What do you think drew you to riding and what is it that you prefer about street riding?

I definitely got into riding through my dad’s love for bikes, as he did when he was a kid. This is why it’s important for all the dads out there who ride to share BMX with their kids.

I can tell you exactly when I knew I was street. When I first started BMX I’d go to the skatepark and go up and down the ramps just like any other kid, but one day I got some pegs and had the most fun I’ve ever had. I did my first feeble that day and just couldn’t believe it. I’ve been feebling ever since, literally! ?

– Do you have any other hobbies outside of riding?

I get home from school and ride until bedtime, and at weekends I ride all day. If I’m injured or I’ve worn myself out and need a day off, I’ll do some drawing or build something with my Lego.

– What’s your fave trick to do at the moment?

I love feebles obviously, but recently I’ve been learning to manual and it’s my favourite thing to do right now. I went so long not being able to do it, and then it clicked and it feels good. Haven’t got it down all the time yet, but the good ones are getting better every day.

– What’s your dream trick?

Hop whip. I’d love to be able to do that one day.

– Have you got any advice for any other young girls getting into bmx?

Just ride your bike and have fun. The more you ride it, the more confident you’ll be.. and the more fun you’ll have.
Oh and get some pegs! ?

– Any shoutouts?

Love to Cult Crew, Seventies, and Fuse Protection for their support, and all the good people of BMX for making it such an amazing thing to be part of.
