Friday Randoms: Who needs a free bus pass? I've got a BMX

“My category is 45 plus…so I’m racing against guys 20 years younger than me,” says Paul who started riding just five years ago aged 65. “I saw the BMX and I thought ‘I’d like to give that a go at this’ and here we are!”

He’s probably about the same age as your granddad but he would skin you around a BMX track! Paul Mounsey is 68 years old but certainly still very young at heart. He started racing BMX when he was made redundant at the age of 63 and fell in love with it ever since. He’s been racing in a lot of comps and getting some good places on the podium. Yes, the bikes are A LOT different to the bikes freestyle BMX riders ride and look a lot more like mtb/jump bike style set ups but there’s no denying this is still pretty awesome!

Paul recently competed for the National Championships and placed above people well below his age, hats off to you Paul! It’s great to see people still riding at that age, which leads me to thinking… Who is the oldest Freestyle BMX rider you know? Please inbox us if your granddad can still do a wicked hop 3 or still hits the local trails with the lads. We’d love to hear about it!
