DVD REVIEW: Entity BMX Shop – The Fun Doesn’t Stop

When Entity’s new DVD arrived at my door, I took some time to consider it.  The Fun Doesn’t Stop.  Is that right?  I had to ask myself, when was the last time I had a BMX DVD delivered?  How long had it been since I sat down on the sofa and watched a BMX video on TV?  Important questions, worrying answers – I couldn’t remember.

Life moves quickly and, before you know it, you’re living through a computer or phone screen and not taking the time necessary to fully enjoy a BMX videographer’s hard work.  Hell, a lot of my job is that exact activity, but I’ve become very used to analysing videos on my computer screen.  I don’t even sit down – I’m a stand up desk guy.  Apart from that, I also have the associated attention challenges of having a six month old daughter, so it’s not often easy to find a solid DVD-length amount of time to dedicate to watching something.

What I’m trying to get at is that this DVD was a very welcome delivery.  It forced me to make time for it.  It didn’t want to be watched while standing at a desk.  I don’t want to say it felt old-fashioned, but there was an element of nostalgia to (first finding and then) firing up my DVD player, grabbing a cold one from the fridge, sitting down and watching a UK BMX scene video.

I was hit with further nostalgia as soon as I pressed play, thanks to filmer/editor Steev CVM’s video style.  Some of the first BMX videos I ever watched and loved were the Compzine videos, also created by Steev.  I’m happy to say The Fun Doesn’t Stop took me back to that vibe, and it was a wonderful connection.  The music was most responsible for that, with an early-mid 2000s pop-punk/indie rock style soundtrack inevitably slinging me right back there, but there are also plenty of long crossfades and dip-to-blacks that lend a bit of a retro element.

“After watching The Fun Doesn’t Stop, I wanted to do two things:
1) Ride my bike, 2) move to Dorset.”

This is not a new school progressive street riding video.  It’s a predominantly ramp riding video, filmed in the healthy as hell Dorset BMX scene.  The birthplace of Ride UK, no less.  Yes, there are some solid street clips in there from the likes of Ash Meade, but the majority of this is skatepark footage – damn good skatepark footage.  All the usual suspects from the Dorset scene are in there, such as Phil Aller, Paul Jeffries, Rob Ridge, Matt Nicklen himself (owner of Entity) plus some cameos from the likes of Mark Webb, Owain Clegg, Shaun Gornall and Jay Cowley.  The rider list is stacked, look!

After watching The Fun Doesn’t Stop, I wanted to do two things: 1) Ride my bike, 2) move to Dorset.

Not many BMX scenes are solid enough to coordinate a DVD.  I take my hat off to the efforts of Entity BMX Shop, Prevail Skatehouse and Steev CVM for making the effort – full length videos are the punctuation marks in our BMX history, and I’m glad this DVD arrived to remind me of that.
