RHK Bodega – DIY Photo Zine Q&A

What is RHK? We get the lowdown...

We caught up with Isaac from RHK to get a bit more insight to their latest release.

For people who don’t know…who are you and what is RHK Bodega?

My name is Isaac North and I run RHK Bodega; a small company/brand that publishes the occasional zine and video, produces random apparel and makes grind wax. Usually bmx street related. Charlie, Sam, Pat, Hayden and others not only represent the brand but contribute with videos and photo section

Tell me more about your latest zine? What prompted this idea?

The zine is a collection of 35mm photos taken at different DIY spots with a 1960’s Concrete Association aesthetic.  Originally, it was going to feature as a smaller section in the forthcoming third issue of the RHK Bodega photo zine. However, with Pat and Hayden bulking it up with some disposables and a visit to Bristol over the summer, it became its own thing.

There’s something different about zines, what was it that drew you to this medium? Any Specific influences you can remember?

When I was a kid I was heavy into punk. Being the 90s with no internet I’d collected a bunch of local punk zines for information and new bands. Always coveting the bigger American publications like Maximum Rock n Roll or Punk World. When I found out about Central Library I started buying zines like Red Steps, Mono and Auto Focus. Also getting American zines from 90east, FRKO and Scapegoat.

Central Library has definetly been a blessing to the UK BMX community, what would you say to other riders who want to make a zine?

A blessing indeed. I’d say, as cliché as it is, just do it! There’s definitely not enough printed bmx media anymore. Companies like Mixam make it so easy to get a zine printed, or it’s easy enough to throw one together at home – which I have in mind for a future project.

Any last words? Any shout outs?

I’d like to give a big thanks to Charlie Jobling for all the help and highly recommend Die Cut Media. word to Central Library, Crucial and Crust BMX Shop for stocking copies. Also thanks for this interview and keep up the good work. Wu-Tang is for the children.
