FRIDAY RANDOMS: Retro BMX Video Games

Taking it back to the oldschool

We’ve had a bit of a think lately about games which featured BMX and came up with a list of retro and ‘mid-school’ BMX video games that’ll refresh some memories and maybe even inspire one or two of you to go up in the loft and dust off your old games console to give one of these a crack!

Welcome to this week’s FRIDAY RANDOMS.

Paperboy – Atari Games

Hell yes! Paperboy was the shit. No one can disagree with that statement. Even if you picked up an old Atari and a copy of this in this day and age you’d spend countless hours smashing it. Hell, even get an emulator and download the rom if you wanna play it on your PC.

T.J Lavin’s Ultimate BMX

Fast forward a good few years and TJ Lavins Ultimate BMX dropped on the Playstation around 2001 (I think) and was one of the first decent BMX games to play. Riding trails on the game was pretty fun too.

Atari 2600 – BMX Air Master

First up we’re gonna go way, way back… Can anyone remember this beauty? BMX Air Master was released way back in 1989 by TNT Games for the Atari 2600 and looks to be pretty basic, I’ve never played it myself but can imagine it’d still be good fun to play.

Dave Mirra’s Freestyle BMX 1 & 2

A personal favourite of mine and many of yours out there too I can imagine. Dave Mirra’s Freestyle BMX 1 was released back in 2000 and the 2nd one dropped in 2001. Countless hours were spent playing these two games with mates when we couldn’t go out and ride. Sometimes even staying in on sunny days and playing this instead of riding (probably why I’m so shit still lol) – Brilliant games. Need to play ’em again…

Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX 1 & 2

It’s impossible to talk about BMX games without mentioning the legendary Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX games. The first Mat Hoffman game was released back in 2001 and the second followed shortly afterwards in 2002. Both were absolutely smashing games and had similar controls to the Tony Hawk games which made it easy to get used to right away!

BMX XXX

Time to get down, dirty and pretty confusing. I’ve got no idea what the hell the creators of BMX XXX were smokin’ on when they dreamt up the concept for this game, but I want some! Strippers in bikinis & pimps, BMX and a crazy-ass soundtrack. Can’t go wrong. LOL – Definitely worth playing for a laugh.

Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland

Ok, ok. So I know what you’re thinking… This is a skating game. Well yes, it is indeed. But you can also ride BMX on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater – American Wasteland and it’s pretty good fun! Give this a go if you’ve got a copy lying about!

Vintage BMX Flyer

We just hit the rewind button on this one. Vintage BMX Flyer was released wayyyy back in the 80’s and many oldschoolers will remember sitting in their room playing this on their handheld Grandstand. Really want to get my hands on one of these, time to open up eBay…
