HSBC National BMX Series Race Report
Round 5&6 – Glasgow – 16-17thJune 2018
RACE REPORT - Identiti
The Proclaimers may have been willing to walk “500 miles", but my round trip to Scotland was just over 850. However, I would happily do it again just to repeat the weekend of great results for the team.
The new track at Knightswood has been built for the Junior and Elite European Games and is an absolute beast. The C&K creation really was a sight to behold and created a real challenge to all the riders at rounds 5&6 of The HSBC National BMX series.
Syd kicked things off for the team on his Krisis MX cruiser in the 15-16’s and after some concerns over the track he went to work in his smooth style to rack up a clean sheet of wins across the weekend as he took maximum points to extend his lead in the national points chase. Just a couple more podiums should see him clear for the title.
In the 40-44 cruiser, I was banging bars with the old boys on my way to the mains both days. Rocking my HT AE05 flat pedals as ever I had my dad on my shoulder, giving me all the energy I needed to keep things moving. Day one rolled by smoothly, but a couple of mistakes in the main saw me back in 6th. The second day went much better though as I got a minter of a gate to put me at the sharp end of the field. Out of the second turn my legs were burning and Graham Stanley reeled me in, but a 4thplace finish was a great result and puts me in 2ndplace overall at the half way point.

Oli was back on the bike after “that crash" in Manchester and buzzing from his W6 plate he won in Buku at the World Championships in the 17-29 cruiser. The track in Scotland was a big step back up, even for a rider of Oli’s ability but he was finding some smooth lines on his way to the finals. Day one saw him battling up at the sharp end as he kept Callum Knight honest to take 2nd. Come the second day, the man we call Buh was finding his feet and some consistent laps saw him float his way back to the top as he took the win.
Into the 20" classes and Syd was buzzing to get some work done in the 16’s. Gates were good, but his track speed was his saviour as he flowed through sections others made look like Toblerones!! The semis racked up and there was nothing between the racers, with everyone capable of making the mains. Syd missed out on the A finals, with 5thin the semis, but followed it up with a 4thin the B final on Saturday, and a win in the B on Sunday after a last straight drag race with Ryan Brookes putting him into 11thoverall.
Christian made the trip up to Scotland to hang with the team and he has started to find his feet in the 17-24 class. The quarter final point was where he finished this weekend, but with a couple of less technical, power tracks on the horizon things will be hotting up for the “Blonde Bombshell". In the Superclass Oli was also getting back into the swing of things and kept it rubber side down with a plan for development and improvement through the season.
Last up was me in Vets on the 20" Krisis MX XL and I was thoroughly warmed up and ready for the task in hand following the cruiser laps. The Vets class was down on numbers, but still full of talent to keep the racing fast and furious. Consistent moto results saw me through to the mains both days with a pair of 5ths to finish off the weekend. Sunday’s main was a real case of “Shoulda, woulda, coulda" as I was feeling fast and gated like Maris Strombergs……regrettably, I went through the first jump like a tired me and went from the podium to mid pack after a rather exciting moment that I was lucky to have stayed rubber side down on. Still, the season is going pretty well so far and 5thoverall at this time will do me nicely.
Massive thanks to Ison Distribution, Identiti Bikes, Gusset Components, Halo Wheels, TSG International, HT Components, ODI Grips, Renthal, Pat Campbell-Jenner, Jordan Lunn, Lloyd Townsend, XLR8 Bike School and all the guys behind the scenes for their support.
We’ll be back on track for rounds 7&8 in Telford in August looking to carry momentum into the second half of the season and improve on our current 6thplace in the National team standings. Watch this space!!
