Shadow Conspiracy Tyre

This is an all-new tyre from The Shadow Conspiracy – designed by Ryan Sher to be exact. Let’s see what he has to say about it; “I designed the tyre to be able to handle up to 110psi, but I like to ride with less tyre pressure than most people, around 60psi to be exact. With that being the case, I would get a lot of pinch flats with a standard tyre. During design, we researched a relief system, or ‘breaker’ to help absorb the impact of a hard landing or hang-up” – well, to do this, they added a band around the sidewall to thicken it in the right place, it features a folding aramid band so it’s lighter than a traditional tyre, and the tread pattern is suitable for any riding surface, be it trails, street, or parks. A true all-round tyre; tested, proven by Shadow’s pros, and rider-designed with good use of technology. What more could you want?

S&M Chanring

The whole retro BMX movement is growing apace, and it seems that eBay is doing a nice turn on old BMX parts these days. S&M know their roots, and while they aren’t old enough to be around when Mongoose were making Motomags, S&M impresario Chris Moeller will definitely remember them – and so the new racing chainwheel is shaped like a Motomag. They also have another sprocket shaped like a Skyway Tuff, so a Motomag makes another logical choice. While the Tuffman comes in smaller, micro-drive sizes, the Motoman only comes in larger, race-specific sizes: 39, 40, 43 and 44 tooth.

The new Profile stem is beautifully machined out in all the right places, without looking so waffer it might snap at any time (like a few stems are these days); this one’s light, decently proportioned, USA-made, CNC machined out, sports traditional front-loading four bolt / two bolt rear, comes in great colours with a machined Profile logo on the front. Dialled.

This is a two-piece, racing, lightweight, CNC machined spider and chainring set-up – yeah, it’s racing, yeah it’s not street, yeah it’s light, and yeah there’s a retro feel to it and I’m into that.

Profile sent us a box o’ parts other than their excellent cranks (see; Icon, last issue) and firstly, here are the super-light bar ends. These affix to your bars using two grub-screws, they are drilled out, and cover enough of the bar’s ends to prevent them from drilling inside your guts next time you land a Bs awry and end up piledriving your stomach onto your handlebars. Bar ends just make sense. Anyone with a small circular cookie-cutter scar on their body will tell you the same.

Primo Pivotal Seat & Post

With everyone jumping onto the bandwagon that is the Pivotal seat system (‘jumping onto a bandwagon’ probably makes it sound like a bad thing, when in fact, the Pivotal is an awesome thing – see last issue’s article on the whole deal) it comes as no surprise that Primo have one out now as well. As well as etching their logo on to a stubby post, Primo have adapted their Balance seat tech to a Pivotal post, and it really works. One of the best Pivotals out there.

The ankle is a delicate place to hit with various parts of your bike, and when you do, it sucks. Prevent that wincing, eye-watering moment of pain with a set of these ankle guards from King Kong. One size fits all and made from breathable neoprene, they have plastic caps for the ankle, elastic strap for firm and comfortable fit, and are finished off with a gorilla icon.

Yes, another safety gear company in this issue – this time, King Kong. King Kong make a great range of products, and first up are the revised shinpads. These are made from micro-perforated neoprene making them breathable, with a plastic shin insert to protect your shins, they come in two sizes, and have four Velcro straps to adjust them and keep them on your legs.

KHE Tyre

KHE have almost redefined the tyre genre and certainly led the way in terms of lightweight refinement with their folding tyres: but, some people reckon that the lighter, folding tyres are too flimsy and burst too easily. And if that’s the case, and those lighter tyres aren’t for everyone, then no worries because KHE have released their tyres in standard non-folding format. They’re still lighter than a most BMX tyres out there, but they’re now more durable, and cheaper. Both the high quality Dirt and Street tyres are available, for around £17 a tyre.

In my humble opinion, one of the best company phrases ever was from Lord Clothing, when they said “dress for the ride, not the crash”. Brilliant. If, however, you want to suit up before you throw down (damn that sounded cheesy. Apologies…) then Fuse have something for every human limb available. Fuse is Wethepeople’s quality safety-gear brand, and they make some dialled pieces of padding. Here we have their Soft Slim Kneepad Gasket; it’s made from 2.5mm breathable Airprene neoprene, has a 10mm thick foam pad, and comes in four sizes – designed to wear under your trousers, with Velcro fastening, they’re very comfortable and do the job.

Next up, Fuse shinpads. These too are made from 2.5mm breathable neoprene, with a removable plastic shinguard piece in the ‘impact area’, Velcro adjustable straps, decent logo down the front, all built with quality construction. And if you don’t like resembling a neoprene robot wearing half a wetsuit at the local spot, fear not, because these can easily fit hidden away under your jeans. Unless, of course, you’re borrowing your sister’s.

I’m into the retro seat from these guys. It’s almost identical to the old ones on old Mongoose Supergooses with that patterned / padded upper, and looks so smart and timeless. It’s not superlight, but then again it is a decent size and shape, with chromoly rails, and now comes in blue. What I want to know is, will Crandall release a tie-dye version?

Here’s a press-fit hiddenset integrated headset in the more popular version of the format, 45x45. CNC machined top caps, anodised in good colours, finished off with an FBM logo, and all with quality sealed bearings.

Yes, yes, we should all know by now that Dia Compe have been making U-brakes since the dawn of U-brakes themselves – so you can fit these, and be safe in the knowledge that they will work. I think the word we’re looking for here is ‘proven’. Here is a new, CNC machined version of the AD999 brake – it has low profile springs, CNC aluminium arms, dual tension stainless steel springs, and comes with Hombre green brake pads: and now in new colours such as purple, green, white and black. £44.99 gets one of the best U-brakes out there on your bike.
