Q&A with Nathan Williams

As you may have noticed, we have a lot of Nathan Williams content. Well, we’ve got more! We wanted to Catch Up with Nathan so we asked him a few questions… Check it out.

Q. Let’s start things off simple. What was your first reaction when you were asked to be a part of the etnies x United collaboration?
I was really excited mainly because I hadn’t got the opportunity to do any sort of collaboration until now and the fact that I’m getting to work with Ian and Povah is a huge plus too. Those dudes have taken care of me so much and are such great people that it’s only right to be stoked on a project like this.

Q. Let’s talk about your choice of shoe and colour-way. You chose the etnies Jameson 2 shoe and mixed up the materials by adding some corduroy. Why did you choose that model, colour and material?
Well, I had been riding in the Jameson 2 quite a bit and liked it so doing the color way on it just made sense. As for the color and material, there isn’t really a story behind it or anything. I was just into those colors and materials. I had seen a couple shoes with that corduroy material on them and it looked nice so I just wanted to incorporate that into the shoe.

Q. The second part of the collaboration is the United Bike Co SU2 complete bike, which matches your choice of colour-way. Have you rode the SU2, and is it similar to your bike?
I have messed around on it while we were shooting a couple photos of the bike but I haven’t actually ridden it for long periods of time. I always just ride the mothership frame.

We asked our Facebook fans, “If you had the chance to ask Nathan Williams one question… What would it be?” Could you answer a few of their questions for them?

Jonathon Grimsey asks – What inspired you to ride BMX?
Mostly my friends that I grew up with. By the time I met them and we became friends they had already been into riding and just building ramps and dirt jumps in the back yard. It looked fun and that’s what they were doing so I it just made sense.

Harry Smith asks – What do you look for in a good coffee?
To be honest I’m not super picky about coffee. I’ll drink whatever is around basically. I’m not really a coffee connoisseur and haven’t put much thought into specific taste. I used to be super into going to Starbucks but it seems to taste burnt the more I try other local places. So I guess as long as it isn’t burnt I’ll drink whatever

Luke Richards asks – If you had to pick one skatepark to ride for the rest of your life, which park would you choose?
Probably Sixth Ave here in Nashville. Mostly because I’ve known everybody up there for so long, it just makes the vibe fun and laid back.

Andrew Lawson-Wood asks – When are you next coming to the UK?
Whenever I can get visas sorted out. I got denied entry a while back so it caused problems with me getting back in. Hopefully soon though!

Q. You’ve had a tonne of photos in Ride UK over the years. All banger ones at that! Which is your favourite photo that you shot for the mag and why?
I don’t really know actually. I haven’t put any thought into that at all. I would probably say the toboggan on the pillar that Walter shot for my interview a while back. I just love the way the photo was shot. No flashes, all natural light. Walter is the man!

Q. You travel a lot. You’ve probably got more passport stamps than Lewis Hamilton! Where are your top 3 places you’ve been to?
Oh man, that’s a tough one. If I had to just pick 3 I would say China, Spain, Helsinki… in no specific order.

Q. So what’s next in the world of Nathan Williams?
Well, I have a bunch of trips coming this winter. Enough to keep me busy through the cold months. Luckily all of the trips are to warm places as well which is never a bad thing. Been working on promo for my shoe called “the brake” which should be done in the next couple months as well. Other then that just riding and having fun!
