Proper’s new video - behind the scenes

December 14, 2007 @ 7:33 PM by Mark Noble

The guys at Proper Bikes have just unleashed their full summer roadtrip video online, and so I decided to find out a bit more about it: we spoke to new IMG rider/employee Gav Shorthall (he also riders for Proper Bike Co) about how the trip went, how the video came out, and what parts he’s helped himself to from his new workplace – as you can see, his new bike is looking dialled:

Gav's 2008 Proper TTL...

RIDE: What are you doing today there at IMG then Gav?

GAV: Well... Today I started with a Myspace nibble, trying to answer the kids’ questions and accepting new friends, which isn't too bad. Since then, my day so far has consisted of phone calls, packing orders, emails and TEA!

I see that you've already pilfered the IMG warehouse - your new bike is looking pretty factory. What's on it?

Haha! I'm a sucker when it comes to new products... I find it quite easy to ignore fresh produce if I see it in a magazine or on the internet, but as it’s there in front of me I can’t control myself! It’s not all that bad though because from now on my bike will be forever dialled! At the moment I'm riding a 21" black TTL which is working really well for me!

Bars: Proper 8.5"

Wheels: Front is a black Proper rim laced with black spokes to a blue Magnalite hub. Rear, black Proper rim laced with black spokes to a blue ceramic driver hub. The rear hub is a prototype version with a female axle that uses allen-key bolts rather than standard bolts. Lovely!

Bar-ends: Black Kink nuggets.

Forks: Proper Proclaimer forks 10mm.

Cranks: Clear-coat Ilegal arms with a Ti axle.

Seat: Kink Pivotal.

Sprocket: Prototype Proper in blue.

Chain: KMC superlight.

Stem: Black Fly Mosca.

Pedals: Polished Odyssey Trailmix. Seeeealed!

Brake: Odyssey Evo 2 in raw.

Brake lever: A haggard black Dia-Comp Dirty Harry.

Brake cable: Black Odyssey Linear.

Tyres: Front Odyssey Dirt Path. Rear Odyssey Path.

Headset: FSA Impact.

Mods? I don’t have any crazy mods going on!? Just a little bit chopped off the lever and I don’t use a top cap on my stem/forks.

Ricky Adam on the Proper Summer Tour...

So the Proper Bike Summer Trip then - how was this for you?

It was definitely up and down from start to finish, but either way we had an amazing time! I thought I had ruined myself on the first day after taking a tumble at Corby skatepark. Can’t really complain about a roadtrip opportunity though... It’s always a treat to get away from home for a week to ride with mates!

Who was on it?

Wow! The minibus we had was stacked... Max Wood - Horsham machine gun! Mike Miller - Tadley Town super hero... Michael Beran - Czech Republic's robot BMXer. Vince Mayne - 15 year old ripper, 10 years ahead of his age! Shaun Jinks - Worthings lovable BMX rogue. Tonash - Horshams beast a of chap with more than 50 names? Josh Suhre - Shook/Micreation fame! Daniel Serra - Portuguese shredder... Jamie Cameron - If you don't know Jamie you lose. Top chap! Paul Jeffries - Ramp destroyer! Ben Marvin - Street muscle... TTL Hank - Tadley Town Local. Drew Sowerby - High speed Scottish! Dave Sowerby - Who doesn't know of Dave? ... And Mr Ricky Adam for a few days too! I hope I haven't forgotten anyone?

Who filmed the video part?

Quite a few of us picked up a camera whilst away, but mostly it was Jamie and Dave.

Where did you go?

I wasn't present for the couple of days away due to band commitments, but anyway... The trip started at the old train tunnel in Petersfield! All the chaps seemed to have a good time there as far as I know! After Petersfield we went to: Corby - Adrenaline Alley. Leeds - Brief session at Hyde Park. Livingston – LIVI! Edinburgh - Street. Aberdeen - two days at Transition Extreme. Dumbarton - Mad lock-in at Unit 23! I could go through all the exciting events of each day, but it would take forever…

What were the highlights for you then?

The one day that sticks with me above all was our last night on the road at Unit 23... Chick hooked us up with a lock-in and I think that’s pretty much the best session I've ever had in a skatepark! Apart from that, the street ride we had in Edinburgh and Livi were amazing!

Who kicked ass on the trip?

The rain kicked all of our asses... Straight up! Apart from the rain, everyone rode really well wherever we went. A couple of things that stood out for me included Josh Suhre's super icepick out of a steep bank in Edinburgh and Michael Beran's relentless flairs... Bah!

Who didn't?

ME!

Livi - still the best concrete park in Scotland? It's on the video...
