Jimmy Walker - 20 Questions

Jimmy cranks an opposite lookback while Tony Hawk climbs the tower in nappies contemplating speed-wobbles.
1. What is your very first memory of BMX?
Going to the trails with my older brother and falling in
love with jumping dirt jumps.
2. How did you feel when you got your first bike
– do you have the same feelings now when you
set up a new bike?
Like a kid in the candy store. Yes, the feeling is the
same, but I actually know how to put a bike together
now – back then it was vice-grips and a screwdriver!
3. What was your first bike like?
A pretty blue Schwinn Scrambler with coaster brake.
4. What is your latest bike like?
A pretty green Terrible One Garrett with no coaster
brake.
5. When and what was the first time you saw a
rider do something amazing on a bike?
1983 Randy Tishmann pedalling full speed at a
quarter pipe and hitting the telephone lines in a
backyard.
6. When and what was the last time you saw a
rider do something amazing on a bike?
April 2007, Mike Dinello doing a 540 tailwhip
nosepick during the last session at Scrap.
7. If you hadn’t discovered BMX, what do you
think you’d be doing now?
Something creative – but thank goodness for BMX.
8. When it comes to riding, do you go for style or
tricks?
I concentrate on doing certain tricks and the style
comes out of those tricks after I feel comfortable
doing them.
9. Do you have to work on progression, or does it
just come naturally to you?
It seems to come naturally, one thing leads to
another.
10. What state of mind enables you to progress
your riding?
The fact that it is sooo much damn fun.
11. What one rider has influenced you the most?
I think all the riders that I see influence me in some
way.
12.What goes down if you have a bad day?
Not much really, I either decide to push through it, or
shut it down and try again tomorrow.
13. When was the first time you tried something big
/ burly / scary?
Couple of days ago, I pulled a 540 barspin on a real
ramp.
14. When was the last time you scared yourself on
your bike?
That same day.
15. What was the last bike part you bought?
A green Tree sprocket for $54.
16. What is the greatest BMX product in the last ten
years?
My black Elina seat from the 80s, but seriously the
overall technology of how BMX frames are made.
17. If you could choose two riders to go riding with
daily, who would they be?
Koji Kraft and Jamie Bestwick.
18. How would you describe your riding?
Like a rollercoaster, sometimes to the left and
sometimes to the right. Sometimes smooth,
sometimes not so smooth.
19. What is your favourite type of riding?
Vert, but I keep an open mind. I just enjoy being on
my bike regardless of what I am riding.
20. Describe an ideal day…
Kiss the wife, make coffee, riding ramps, kiss the
wife, eating, hanging out with the wife, seeing a good
movie, sleeping.
