Cameron Wood Interview

interview Dolecki, Matt Beringer, and Shawn ‘Elf’ Walters

Cameron still seems new to the scene in Salt Lake City to me, but I cannot picture how it would be without him around. He is such a highly motivated person; he does so much that most people cannot comprehend his enthusiasm. He rides his bike everywhere instead of driving, no matter how far the distance. Throughout the last couple of years he has improved his riding to such an amazing extent. He’ll send himself down the biggest gaps and make it look smooth. I used to think a lot of the things he wanted to do were way out of the question; Cameron has proved me wrong and has gone even bigger. I can only hope to keep witnessing his progression and enthusiasm for years to come. —Elf

I’ve known Cameron for around five years now and he has been on the Utah scene even longer. The kid is very talented on a bike and very creative, due to hanging out with Beringer and Elf. Cam has also started building trails in SLC, which is something that a lot of younger riders don’t do anymore. So if you ever come and ride with Cam make sure you bring a shovel! Enjoy the ride, Cam. —Fuzz

Cameron: I hate interviews…

Matt: You’ve never been interviewed before. (Laughter) How many contests have you entered?

Maybe eight or nine; I don’t know.

M: Are you competitive at all – do you want to do good compared to everyone else, or just for yourself?

I just want to ride for myself. I’m not trying to beat my friends. It’s fun riding in a jam format; (in the ones I enter) there’s not big money involved, so it’s just about having fun. Besides, why do you need to train to ride a bike; that is stupid.

M: What do you say to the kids that come up to you after a contest and say “Hey dude, I saw you in the magazines, or on Road Fools, and I beat you…” do you think that’s funny, or does that frustrate you?

There are definitely people out there that frustrate me, but at least they’re riding a bike. Sometimes maybe people aren’t riding for the right reasons… I don’t know. I can’t answer that.

M: You’re the one that’s being interviewed now; you’re supposed to know this. (Laughter)

You’re asking me all these complex things, man. You know how friggin’ weird I am. (Laughter)

Rob: So what do you think of magazine interviews?

I think magazines should only do photos, and no interviews; that way I don’t have to look stupid in front of ten thousand people. (Laughter) And everyone be like, “Man that kid is stupid.” It’s just riding, nothing more nothing less. It is what is. People are going to talk shit no matter what.

Elf: You used to hit your head like once a week when street riding, and now you’re wearing a helmet a lot. Do you think that’s affected you at all?

I’d definitely say it’s affected me a little bit, because some of those were near-death experiences. I know that sometimes when I ride a bike I need to wear a helmet. Everything you do on a bike is crazy. Usually you should wear a helmet for most things; it’s something smart to do. I’ve probably knocked myself out at least three or four times completely out to where I had no idea what was going on. It makes you stop and look back at life. To tell you the truth, it’s scary.

R: There’s a lot of people out there that think if you do a street trick with a helmet on it’s not as cool; what do you think about that?

I don’t really have a comment for that, other than why kill yourself? (Laughter) You’re obviously not invincible; I’m not invincible. I don’t really care if people think it’s street or not. Wearing a helmet is safer. Hell no, we are not invincible.

M: The first time I met Cam, him and his friends came to my house wearing like Dan’s Comp shirts. They came to our house because they saw the Mongoose rig in font of our place because of Chuck, and I swear you were the one that asked me about a ‘Prime-o’ something. What was it? You deny it… (Laughter)

I think it was ‘Greg’ that asked that. (Laughter)

M: Maybe it was.

First time I met you guys, I think I forgot how to talk or something, man; (I was) too intimidated. All you guys are triple OGs. I looked up to you guys forever.

M: One time Crandall asked me if we picked on you a lot, and I said we still do. (Laughter) I think he was kind of serious; do you think we pick on you? (Laughter)

No, I don’t think you guys ever pick on me; I just think you wonder what the hell I’m always thinking. (Laughter) I don’t know what the heck I’m thinking. (Laughter) Except for Elf; he is always picking on me.
